Santa Cruz contains the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands.[12][13]

The island is home to the University of La Laguna; founded in 1792 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is the oldest university in the Canaries. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is the second to have been founded on the island, and is the third of the archipelago. The city of La Laguna was capital of the Canary Islands before Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833.[14]

Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site in the center of the island, has Teide, the highest elevation of Spain, the highest of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the third-largest volcano in the world from its base.[15] Also located on the island, Macizo de Anaga since 2015 has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.[16] It has the largest number of endemic species in Europe.[16]

Trails Network of Tenerife

Hiking in Tenerife
Tenerife has an extensive network of marked tourist trails, being able to make interesting excursions on foot, both guided
and self-guided. There are also numerous recreational areas that offer a wide range of services.
The rugged island orography attracts numerous mountaineers who want to practice climbing or descending ravines and offers paragliders takeoff points
 with unusual perspectives.
In the Teide National Park there is an extensive network of trails that allow access to places of interest. The administration of the Park, taking into account criteria of safety, comfort, knowledge and enjoyment of visitors,
especially recommends the use of guided and self-guided routes, existing other paths that due to their excessive danger and length are not recommended for most of the people.

THE NETWORK OF FOREST PATHS OF TENERIFE

A project to enjoy the mountains of the island through its traditional roads: The Island Council of Tenerife is designing a network of trails according to the international standards of the ERA (European Ramblers Association), approved
or pending approval by the FEDME (Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing). The trails of the Forest Spaces of Tenerife are an offer of leisure for any lover of nature. In downloads you can see the essential information about this new network (in
"The Trails Network" and "Map of Trails I and II").

THE ADVANTAGES OF APPROVED TRAILS All the trails of this network are approved or are in the process of being. To achieve this distinction, the paths have been carefully defined
and qualified. In addition, each trail will have a series of standardized means, which will consist of a complete and easy to understand signage, and a topo guide to carry in the backpack. The approved trails have a unique and simple signaling code, which
emerges with the intention of unifying signaling criteria on the European trails.

Vertical signs
All the trails have information panels in the recommended places to start the excursion. In addition,
at the main junctions, the signaling marks are reinforced with vertical poles indicating the places of destination and the distance that remains to be traveled in each case.
Each approved trail will have its topoguide. It is a leaflet with the map
of the path, and its variants and derivations, as well as essential information to travel safely. In addition, it includes a series of "extra" content that will bring greater quality to the visit.

TYPES OF PATHS
The
trails are recognized by initials and a number. There are three main types of trails:
GR or Long Distance trail, whose route lasts more than one day.
PR or Small Route, less than 50 km, which can be completed in one day.
SL
or Local Trail, less than 10 km, joins trails of higher rank, or makes small local loops.

of June 19, on the Declaration of Natural Spaces of the Canary Islands. On that occasion it was classified as a natural park and, after Law 12/1994, of December 19, that environment was renamed Parque Rural de Anaga.
The space where the Montes de
Anaga Lodge is located has also been declared as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). On the other hand, the integral natural reserves of the Pijaral, Ijuana and the Roques de Anaga, located within the Park, are considered as areas of ecological sensitivity

Nautical sports

The Canary Islands are subject to the trade winds of the North - Northeast, which blow from moderate to strong and with remarkable
regularity. These dominant winds reach higher speeds in summer due to the anticyclone of the Azores.
Both for advanced sailors and for beginners who start in this spectacular sport, Tenerife offers different Wind Surf schools, guaranteeing the wind
navigation in any season. Among the different areas of the island, the beaches of El Médano, El Cabezo and La Jaquita stand out for their incredible conditions for practicing Wind Surf. The first is suitable for medium-high level athletes, the others
being more suitable for athletes with a higher level. They have held several Grand Slam events that can be scored for the World Cup in the disciplines of "waves", "slalom" and "course race".
The force of the wind (Beaufort scale) varies between
4 to 8 in La Jaquita, 4 to 7 in El Cabezo and 3 to 5 in El Médano.

Diving and diving clubs Submarinism in Tenerife.

 The island
offers unbeatable conditions for the diver, such as swimming in a dense curtain of bright fish or feeding large rays. There are numerous diving clubs and specialized companies, most of them have a website with information about diving areas, facilities and
courses, and complementary information. In Tenerife there are about thirty immersion points scattered throughout the coast, where it is possible to discover an interesting marine flora and fauna, as well as the remains of sunken ships. The best places to dive
are, among others, Las Galletas, Playa Paraíso and Punta de la Rasca to the South, as well as Garachico, Puerto de la Cruz or Punta de Teno to the North. The most frequent fish in rocky bottoms are the grouper, the abalone, the old, salemas, bream,

In the Tenerife coast, marine ecosystems with a high number of endemisms are conserved. It highlights the presence of species of turtles of interest, such as the loggerhead turtle, and a permanent colony of tropical pilot whales or pilot whales off the southern coasts, with frequent sightings of the bottlenose dolphin. These two species of cetaceans live permanently in the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera.

Karting

The sport of karting sees the light in the United States in the year 1951. The first known kart was built with welded
heating pipes, airplane glide wheels, a lawnmower engine and the steering wheel of an old disused airplane. The first devices were very rudimentary and reached scarcely 50 km / h.
Pilots of the stature of Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard,
and many others collaborated in their sporting beginnings to the karting was spread throughout the world and especially the most important base of the current automotive sport.

It is the largest green space in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and was developed on an artificial mountain between the city and the Atlantic Ocean: an old landfill closed in 1983. It contains the largest collection of palm trees in Europe next to streams, lakes and waterfalls.

The Palmetum is the only landscaped mountain on the coast of the city and has abundant viewpoints, with splendid views of the sea, the city and the Anaga mountain range. The project began in 1995 with funding from the European Union and the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The landscape design of the mountain was made under the direction of the agronomists Manuel Caballero and José Timón, the biologist Carlo Morici and the garden designer Carlos Simón. The park includes a large system of waterfalls, streams and lakes, a Palm Tree Museum with more than 1,000 ethnographic pieces, with laboratories and offices, a nursery, a breeding greenhouse and a shade house, known as the Octagon, to house the most important species. delicate The collection grew remarkably between 1996 and 1999, when cooperation with other botanical gardens was intense. It was inaugurated on January 28, 2014 by the Princes of Asturias. Currently, the botanical garden maintains about 2,000 plant species and a total of approximately 3,600 specimens. It has some 470 species of valuable and rare palm trees, thanks to which it is a reference collection. Among the cultivated species, 72 are in danger of extinction included in the IUCN red list. The collection is focused on island palm trees and the most important biogeographical section is dedicated to the Caribbean, which extends over an area of more than 40,000 m2. The collection of Caribbean palms is among the most complete in the world. Santa Cruz of Tenerife Museums of Tenerife Web: Tenerife Museums

MUSEUM OF NATURE AND MAN (MNH)   Introduction and Contents The Canarian biodiversity and the abundance of remains belonging to an extinct culture, made the islands considered privileged laboratories for the investigation of nature and man by the numerous scientists (Darwin, Humboldt, Verneau, Lyell, Webb and Berthelot among others) ) who visited them during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As a consequence of this interest, archaeological, bioanthropological and naturalistic funds were accumulated in different private and public collections, which formed the basis on which the Island Council of Tenerife created, in the 50s of the last century, the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Archaeological Museum of Tenerife. Both museums have ended up together with the Canary Institute of Bioanthropology, in a modern exhibition project, the Museum of Nature and Man, which puts at the service of its visitors all the potential of contents, collections and knowledge, accumulated during decades of research and scientific work, providing a rigorous and entertaining vision of the natural wealth of the Canary Islands and their pre-Hispanic populations. The Museum of Nature and Man is located in the Old Civil Hospital, an outstanding example of the neoclassical architecture of the islands and, probably, masterpiece of the architect Oráa. The visit to the permanent exhibition begins on the Ground Floor, making a tour of the "Origin and Nature of the Canary Islands". Through modern audiovisual techniques, various aspects of the nature of this archipelago are exposed: its geological origin and evolution, the volcanic and meteorological phenomena that determine its landscapes and an interesting journey through the Canarian ecosystems and its rich biodiversity. The tour begins with an Introduction room (Floor 1), which deals with the islands as ideal laboratories for the study of cultures and the natural environment. Then you can choose to visit the ring of Natural Sciences or the Archeology. In the first one are the rooms dedicated to "Botany", "Terrestrial Invertebrates" and "Terrestrial Vertebrates", while the "Collections" and "Archeology of Tenerife" rooms are presented in the symmetrical ring.

Next, you access the second floor of the museum, where a more traditional but not less surprising exhibition method is used. The tour begins in an introductory room entitled "Canary through Time", whose content goes from the first news of the Archipelago in ancient times to the present time. MUNICIPAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS   This museum consists of fourteen rooms; its funds correspond mainly to painting, although there are also samples of sculptures and minor arts. Account with both its own fund and a deposit of works of the Prado Museum in Madrid of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Among its best works include: the "San José", by Ribera the "Portrait of Isabel II", by Federico de Madrazo the "Portrait of Fernando Viscaí", by Joaquín Sorolla the "Triptych of Nava", of the flamenco school of the XVIth century, whose central part is due to Peter Coeck, recently restored by the Institute of the Spanish Historical Heritage. It also has as a fixed background a large sample of the best Canarian painters, with works by Gaspar de Quevedo, Cristobal Hernandez de Quintana, Juan de Miranda, González Méndez, Valentín Sanz, Bonnín, Sureda, Alfaro, Guezala, Pedro González and Oscar Domínguez, among others. C / José Murphy, 12 (Plaza del Príncipe) Santa Cruz of Tenerife Tel: 922 24 43 58 - Fax: 922 27 44 17 Hours: Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

REGIONAL MILITARY MUSEUM OF THE CANARY ISLANDS   C / San Isidro, 1 (Castillo de Almeida) Santa Cruz of Tenerife Tel .: 922 845 734 - Fax: 922 24 95 04 Hours: Monday to Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Free admission). Important: carry your ID This museum was established in 1988 in the Castillo de Almeida, and has become one of the best historical cartography research centers in the Canary Islands. Among the large sample of armaments and
other objects related to military activity in the Canary Islands, it occupies a prominent place corresponding to the attempted attack of Nelson against Santa Cruz, on July 25, 1797. In the exhibition that develops the events that occurred during this feat
you can see uniforms and personal items of illustrious soldiers and models of ancient military constructions. The two flags that the forces of Horacio Nelson left in Tenerife, along with that of the Canary militias, are displayed in the main exhibition. The
museum also exhibits collections of ancient weapons used by Guanches and Castilians in the clashes over the Conquest of Tenerife that took place at the end of the 15th century, and oils and watercolors by famous Canarian painters. Interpretation Center "Castillo de San Cristóbal"   The Interpretation Center "Castillo de San Cristóbal", managed by the Autonomous Organization of Museums and Centers of the Island Council of Tenerife, is an interpretative proposal that allows the visitor to discover and contextualize the remains of the Castillo de San Cristóbal wall and know something more about the history and the defensive system of the Island. In June 2006, during the remodeling works of the Plaza de España, remains of what was the Castillo de San Cristóbal appear. Given the historical importance of the discovery, it is decided to protect and enhance this resource by incorporating into the original project of the team of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron an underground gallery that was enabled to make it visitable. The Center exposes the defensive system that Tenerife had, making a tour not only of the castles of Santa Cruz - such as San Cristóbal, San Juan or Paso Alto - but also by those that were distributed throughout the rest of the island's geography, of which some continue today, such as San Felipe in Puerto de la Cruz or San Miguel in Garachico. The exhibition project, which has been prepared by the Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife, culminates with the monographic explanation dedicated to the Castle of San Cristóbal, from its construction in 1575 until its demolition in 1928. The trace of its silhouette, now highlighted on the bottom of the lake, it had so far only been remembered in the name of the popular Calle Castillo, but it has now appeared in the present and it seems that it is reclaiming its place, again, in the history of the city. Since July 25, 2009, the Interpretation Center "Castillo de San Cristóbal" has an added attraction: the legendary "El Tigre" canyon is exposed to the delight of the public, resident and foreigner. It is a bronze cannon from the XVIII century, cast in Seville, about 3 m. long and 2000 Kg. of weight. In order to enhance this historic space, the symbolic canyon "El Tigre" is transferred from the Museo Historico Militar de Canarias to the Interpretation Center, to be exhibited in a room prepared specifically for that purpose.

This new temporary location is ideal for the emblematic canyon, not only because it is a piece of exception to illustrate the exhibition discourse of the center, but also, it will be located in a place very close to the one that, on the night of July 24, 1797, truncated the British aspirations to become so prized strategic place and, at the time, encumbró to the city of Santa Cruz to the legal-administrative cusp of Tenerife and, by extension, of the Canary Islands. Although historically unprovable, popular tradition admits that it was "El Tigre" who wounded the famous English admiral Horacio Nelson, snatching an arm. Symbol of that deed, "El Tigre" has survived in the memory of Tenerife. It has been mentioned, reproduced and imagined since then and has remained over time as one of the most powerful metaphors and allegories of the value and feelings of the people of Tenerife. As a result of this interest, archaeological, bioanthropological and naturalistic funds were accumulated in different private and public collections, which formed the basis on which the Island Council of Tenerife created, in the 50s of the last century, the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Archaeological Museum of Tenerife.

Both museums have ended up together with the Canary Institute of Bioanthropology, in a modern exhibition project, the Museum of Nature and Man, which puts at the service of its visitors all the potential of contents, collections and
knowledge, accumulated during decades of research and scientific work, providing a rigorous and entertaining vision of the natural wealth of the Canary Islands and their pre-Hispanic populations. The Museum of Nature and Man is located in the Old Civil Hospital,
an outstanding example of the neoclassical architecture of the islands and, probably, masterpiece of the architect Oráa. The visit to the permanent exhibition begins on the Ground Floor, making a tour of the "Origin and Nature of the Canary Islands".
Through modern audiovisual techniques, various aspects of the nature of this archipelago are exposed: its geological origin and evolution, the volcanic and meteorological phenomena that determine its landscapes and an interesting journey through the Canarian
ecosystems and its rich biodiversity. The tour begins with an Introduction room (Floor 1), which deals with the islands as ideal laboratories for the study of cultures and the natural environment. Then you can choose to visit the ring of Natural Sciences or
the Archeology.
In the Archeology ring you will find the thematic units "Collections", of pre-Columbian art and African ethnography, reflecting the cultural diversity of Africa and the pre-Hispanic cultures of Central and South America; "Prehistory of the Canary Islands", where the way of life of the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands is explained; and "Human Bioanthropology", where, among other contents, the impressive Guanche mummies are exhibited.
If you choose the circuit of Natural Sciences, you will
find the rooms dedicated to "Fossils, Minerals and Rocks", with whimsical examples of the Mineral Kingdom and "Marine Biology", in which the visitor is immersed in the beauty and natural wealth of the marine environment of the islands, highlighting the spectacular
specimens and reproductions at scale of cetaceans, chelonians, etc. made in the taxidermy workshops of the museum itself.
